About
AWiM25

The African Women in Media (AWiM) Conference is the largest and most influential annual gathering focused on the intersection of women’s rights and media development across Africa. Since 2017, AWiM Conferences have toured various African countries, bringing together media practitioners, academics, civil society organisations (CSOs), policymakers, and technology experts to collaborate on strategies to advance gender equality in and through media.

The 2025 edition, AWiM25, hosted at the African Union Commission in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, comes at a crucial moment. It builds on the momentum of the Kigali Declaration on the Elimination of Gender Violence in and through Media in Africa by 2034, which AWiM’s community collaboratively designed in 2023. This year’s theme, “Beyond Commitments: Advancing Policies for Gender-Safe Media,” underscores the urgent need to translate pledges into action, aligning with the recently adopted African Union’s Convention to End Violence Against Women and Girls (AU-CEVAWG) and other critical continental frameworks.

AWiM25 will convene over 250 delegates and speakers to engage in impactful dialogues, share best practices, drive policy innovations, and foster tangible change towards a media ecosystem that is inclusive, equitable, and safe for all.

AWiM25 is in partnership with
the African Union Commission

TheAfrican Union Commission (AUC) is a continental body which was officially launched in 2002 as a successor to the Organisation of African Unity (OAU, 1963-1999) and comprised of 55 Member States, representing the entire African continent. Guided by its vision for “An Integrated, Prosperous and Peaceful Africa, driven by its own citizens and representing a dynamic force in the global arena”, the AUC aims to achieve greater unity and solidarity between African countries while advancing political and socio-economic integration of the continent. To ensure the realization of its objectives and the attainment of the Pan African Vision, the AUC developed Agenda 2063 as a strategic framework for Africa’s long term socio-economic and integrative transformation.

In line with Aspiration 6 of Agenda 2063 “An Africa, whose development is people-driven, relying on the potential of African people, especially its women and youth, and caring for children”, the Women, Gender, and Youth Directorate (WGYD) advances gender equality and women’s empowerment and further champions and coordinates the development of youth initiatives at the continental and international levels. The mission of the Directorate is to spearhead the implementation of the AUC Strategy on Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment (GEWE) and coordinate policy development as well as gender and youth mainstreaming efforts across the Commission. WGYD additionally supports the work of the AUC’s Chairperson Special Envoy on Women, Peace and security and Envoy on Youth.
