Emma Heywood (PhD) is a researcher and Senior Lecturer in Journalism, Radio and Communication at the University of Sheffield in the UK. Her research interests lie in the role of media, and particularly radio, in fragile and conflict-affected zones, with a specific focus on francophone sub-Saharan Africa. Specialising in impact assessments and audience research, she works closely with international media development agencies, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and civil society organisations (CSOs). Her monograph “Radio and Women’s Empowerment in Francophone West Africa” (Routledge) results from large-scale qualitative and quantitative research into the impact of radio on women’s empowerment in Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso.
